Water Purifiers for Restaurants and Hotels: A Selection Guide
Hotels and restaurants use water for drinking, beverages, ice, cooking, dishwashing, laundry, guest rooms, boilers and cooling. These applications do not necessarily need the same treatment. A useful design begins with water testing and a map of where water is used.
Match treatment to the application
| Application | Typical concern | Possible treatment role |
|---|---|---|
| Drinking and beverages | Taste, odour, dissolved contaminants and microbial risk | Filtration, carbon, RO, UV or disinfection as justified by testing |
| Ice machines | Scale, taste and hygiene | Equipment-specific filtration and sanitation |
| Dishwashing | Hardness, spotting and scale | Softening or other hardness control |
| Boilers and steam | Scale, corrosion and carryover | Application-specific pretreatment and chemical programme |
| Laundry | Hardness and detergent consumption | Softening where appropriate |
Questions to answer before choosing equipment
- What is the source—municipal, borewell, tanker or mixed?
- What do laboratory results show, and how does quality vary seasonally?
- What are average and peak hourly demands?
- Which uses require potable water and which need equipment protection?
- Is there adequate hygienic storage and distribution?
- Who will monitor and maintain each system?
Taste is not the same as safety
Activated carbon may improve chlorine-related taste and odour, but exhausted or poorly maintained media can create operational problems. TDS readings do not demonstrate microbiological safety. Product-water verification and hygienic storage are essential.
Operational checklist
- Keep filter-change and sanitation records.
- Monitor pressure, flow and conductivity where relevant.
- Protect storage tanks from contamination.
- Clean beverage, ice and dispensing equipment to manufacturer instructions.
- Investigate changes in taste, odour, turbidity or output promptly.
ABHIRO supplies commercial water-treatment systems, filters, membranes and testing products in Coimbatore. A proposal should be based on water analysis, demand and the intended use at each outlet.
