Commercial RO Membrane Replacement Frequency: A Practical Guide
Commercial filters and RO membranes should be replaced according to measured condition, not a universal calendar date. Feed-water quality, operating hours, pretreatment performance, recovery, cleaning practice and shutdown conditions all affect service life.
Typical monitoring approach
| Component | Monitor | Replacement trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Cartridge filter | Inlet/outlet pressure and visual condition | Excessive pressure drop, damage or inability to protect the RO |
| Activated-carbon media | Chlorine breakthrough and pressure drop | Breakthrough, fouling or exhausted capacity |
| Softener resin | Outlet hardness and regeneration performance | Persistent hardness leakage after operational causes are corrected |
| RO membrane | Normalised flow, salt rejection and pressure drop | Performance remains unacceptable after correct cleaning and troubleshooting |
Signs that membranes need investigation
- Product-water conductivity rises under comparable operating conditions.
- Normalised permeate flow declines.
- Pressure drop across the membrane stage increases.
- Feed pressure or energy demand rises to maintain output.
- Cleaning restores little performance.
Temperature, feed TDS and pressure change daily performance, so raw flow readings can be misleading. Record operating data consistently and compare normalised performance wherever possible.
Do not replace a membrane before checking the cause
Poor output may result from clogged cartridges, low feed pressure, incorrect valve settings, scale, organic fouling, oxidant exposure, damaged seals or faulty instruments. Identify the cause before replacing equipment; otherwise the new membrane may develop the same problem.
A useful maintenance log
Record date, operating hours, feed and product conductivity, feed/product/reject flow, stage pressures, pressure drop, pH, temperature, chemical dose, filter changes and cleaning events. Trend data is more useful than an isolated reading.
ABHIRO supplies industrial RO membranes and spares. Model selection and replacement decisions should be based on verified specifications and operating data.
