4040 vs 8040 RO Membranes: Pressure Vessel Loading and Element Count

4040 vs 8040 RO Membranes: Pressure Vessel Loading and Element Count

Quick answer: how many RO membranes fit in a pressure vessel?

The answer depends on the pressure-vessel model and element length. A 4040 membrane is nominally about 4 inches in diameter and 40 inches long, while an 8040 element is about 8 inches in diameter and 40 inches long. Pressure vessels are manufactured for a specified number of elements, so element count must match the housing design.

4040 membrane applications

4040 elements are commonly used in smaller commercial and light-industrial RO systems. Depending on the housing, a vessel may be designed for one or more 40-inch elements. The exact loading must be checked from the vessel manufacturer’s model designation.

8040 membrane applications

8040 elements are widely used in larger industrial RO systems because each element provides much more membrane area than a 4040 element. Multi-element 8-inch pressure vessels are common, but the permitted element count is specific to the vessel model.

Why you should not guess element count from vessel length

The pressure vessel includes end closures, thrust components, interconnectors and internal clearances. The vessel manufacturer’s element-count rating is the correct reference. Installing the wrong number of elements or incorrect spacers can create sealing, loading and hydraulic problems.

What to confirm before ordering a pressure vessel

  • Membrane diameter: 4-inch or 8-inch
  • Element length and manufacturer
  • Number of elements per vessel
  • Operating and design pressure
  • Side-port or end-port configuration
  • Port sizes and material compatibility
  • End-closure and thrust-ring arrangement
  • Interconnector and adapter compatibility

Does more elements per vessel mean higher recovery?

Not automatically. Recovery is a system-level design parameter. Adding elements changes membrane area and hydraulic distribution, but acceptable recovery still depends on array design, concentrate flow, flux and feed-water scaling limits.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 4040 membrane be installed in an 8040 vessel?

No. The diameter, adapters and vessel design are different.

Are all 8040 pressure vessels the same length?

No. They are available for different element counts and pressure ratings.

Should element count be selected only from required LPH?

No. Membrane area, flux, recovery, feed quality, array design and operating pressure must all be considered.
