How to Choose an Industrial UV Water Purification System by Flow Rate and Application

Choosing a UV water-treatment system starts with the application and design flow—not with the brand name or pipe size alone. A system that is correctly sized for one application may be unsuitable for another if the flow, water quality or monitoring requirement is different.

1. Start with the required flow rate

Record the maximum operating flow in LPH or m³/hr. UV exposure depends on the hydraulic design and the time water spends in the UV chamber, so flow is one of the first selection inputs.

2. Identify the application

  • Commercial drinking water: offices, institutions, hotels, water coolers and similar applications.
  • Industrial RO post-treatment: UV after RO or other treatment stages where microbial control is required.
  • Swimming pools: system selection must match the circulation flow and pool-treatment design.
  • ETP/STP treated-water reuse: UV can be used as a disinfection stage when the upstream treatment and water quality are suitable.
  • Process water: food, beverage and other industrial applications may require additional monitoring or validation features.

3. Check water quality before sizing

Turbidity, suspended solids, colour and other water-quality factors can reduce UV transmission. Pretreatment may therefore be necessary before the UV chamber. Where available, share UV transmittance and the relevant water analysis with the supplier.

4. Confirm connection and monitoring requirements

Check inlet/outlet size, electrical supply, chamber arrangement and whether the project requires intensity monitoring, alarms, hours-run indication or control-panel integration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I select a UV system only by LPH?

No. Flow rate is essential, but water quality, UV transmission, application, connection size and required monitoring also matter.

Can UV replace RO?

No. UV and RO perform different treatment functions. UV is primarily a disinfection process, while RO is a membrane-separation process for dissolved salts and other constituents. System design should be based on the feed-water problem and target quality.

Where should UV be installed in an RO plant?

The location depends on the process design. UV is commonly used at selected points in treated-water systems, but the final location should be based on the plant design, storage and distribution arrangement.
