Fluoride in Water: Testing and Treatment Options

Fluoride in Water: Testing and Treatment Options

Quick answer: how is fluoride removed from water?

Fluoride treatment should be selected from a laboratory fluoride result, the complete water chemistry and the required treated-water quality. Reverse osmosis, activated alumina and other adsorption or ion-exchange processes may be used depending on the application, but performance must be confirmed for the actual water.

Why a TDS meter cannot tell you fluoride

A TDS meter estimates total dissolved ionic content. It cannot identify fluoride specifically, so a laboratory or suitable fluoride test method is needed.

Common treatment approaches

  • Reverse osmosis: can reduce fluoride along with many other dissolved ions when correctly designed and operated.
  • Adsorption media: selected media can remove fluoride under suitable pH and water-quality conditions.
  • Ion exchange or other specialized processes: may be used in specific applications.

What should be checked before selecting treatment?

  • Fluoride concentration
  • pH and alkalinity
  • TDS/conductivity
  • Hardness and competing ions
  • Required flow and daily demand
  • Intended use and applicable quality requirement

Frequently asked questions

Does boiling remove fluoride?

No. Boiling does not remove dissolved fluoride and can concentrate dissolved salts as water evaporates.

Can activated carbon remove fluoride reliably?

Standard activated carbon should not be assumed to remove fluoride reliably. Use a treatment process specifically selected and verified for fluoride removal.

Can RO remove fluoride?

RO can reduce fluoride, but actual performance depends on membrane condition, pressure, recovery and feed-water chemistry.
